Aleutian Island - Alaska Volcano Active Again

Shishaldin Volcano, located in the Aleutian Islands, is again showing activity. Smoke and ash is rising from the vent of the most symmetrical, conical volcano in the world. Shishaldin last showed activity in 2009, and in April-May 1999 produced a 45,000 ft ash column.

Shishaldin is one of the volcanoes located along the Ring of Fire, and the highest peak in the Aleutians. There are over 100 volcanoes and volcanic fields in Alaska that have been active at some point in the last two million years. The Alaska Volcano Observatory has a website (http://www.avo.alaska.edu/volcanoes/#-167.467:56.541:5 that shows which are currently active.
